A medium-lenght (160 pages) study of the industrial development of Austria,
covering the Industrial Revolution, which started around 1750, and coincided with the rule of Empress Maria Theresia (1717-1780),
who headed the Habsburg Empire from 1740 to her death. Other influential figures include:
Arthur Krupp (1856-1938), who developed Berndorf from a little village into an industrial town, and was one of the pioneers of
socal housing; Fritz Mandl (1900-1977), a prominent and highly controversial Austrian arms manufacturer
who became internationally known in the 1930s as Europe's "Cartridge King."; his wife (from 1933-1937), the Viennese actress
Hedwig Kiesler (1914-2000), who escaped his "gilded cage", moved to the United Statest, took up the screen name Hedy Lamarr,
and achieved the rare distinction of being celebrated both as Hollywood's "most beautiful woman in the world"
as well as a brilliant technological visionary - the co-inventor of frequency-hopping spread-spectrum technology
that later laid the foundational groundwork for modern wireless communication, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
